Ecological guides

Starting on February 13, 2016, we have started offering a series of workshops regarding several topics related to the Tres Palmas Marine Reserve. These workshops are part of a Sea Grant Program project aimed at training students from the Manuel García Pérez high school as ecological guides in the Tres Palmas Marine Reserve. This would enable students to fulfill their community service hours by educating reserve visitors about the importance and need to protect such a valuable place.

Collaboration Agreements

On Friday, January 29th, 2016, Amigos de Tres Palmas and the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DNER) made a commitment to work together in managing the Tres Palmas Marine Reserve. This action took shape through a co-management agreement signed by both parties. On the same date, a second collaboration agreement was signed to ensure security and monitoring on the Reserve. This agreement was signed by Amigos de Tres Palmas, DNER, and the Rincón Municipality City Hall.

Wetland

Sedimentation is one of the biggest threats to coral reefs. Having the goal of protecting the wetland from the sediment-carrying runoff, the DNER installed wooden pylons to prevent vehicular access to this vulnerable area. This measure aims to improve the conditions which aid the recovery of local mangroves (Laguncularia racemosa).

Solid wastes

The Department of Natural and Environmental Resources installed two green stations on Steps Beach, seeking to use the Green Station Program to foster better solid residue management practices in our beaches. The disposal of the waste collected will be managed by the Rincón Municipality.

Nearshore breaker model

Since 2015, the Tres Palmas Reserve breaking waves model is available to the public. We encourage you to visit the CariCOOS.org website before undertaking any recreational activity and check the wave height forecast and see if the conditions are appropriate for the activity you wish to perform.

An interagency meeting was held on June 9th, 2015, to discuss the intention of establishing a co-management agreement between Amigos de Tres Palmas, the reserve’s Management Board, and the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources along with support from the Rincón Municipality.
